Again in 2016, my family and friends are participating in the Dallas – Fort Worth Undy Run/Walk Saturday, November 12 at Levitt Pavilion.
Paula and I began participating after her stage-4 diagnosis in 2012. So this is now a 4-year tradition. We are still a tag team – I walk, she spiritually whispers to me to go faster. Because I do walk for both of us I keep my financial objective correspondingly high; and appeal to you all to help however much as you can.
Where before, I would say I’m doing this for Paula, I now continue to say I’m doing this for all of us. We know the numbers: 1 in 20 of us will develop colon cancer. Though 90% of new diagnoses are of those 50+, the incidence rate is falling – which is great! However, the incidence rate of the under-50 age group continues to climb. So we are all at risk, regardless of age or gender – and as long as we want to eat. Despite being treatable when detected early; colorectal cancer still is the second largest cancer killer behind lung cancer. So the need for awareness and support continues.
I firmly believe that Paula’s experience should serve as a reminder to us all that the money we invest now, will help some of us in the future.
The 2015 DFW Undy had its best results in 3 years. I hope the central Arlington location continues to be embraced and the DFW Undy continues to grow into a metroplex-wide event. Anyone is welcome to come join our team: Scope It Out. But we also welcome any group that is interested in running or walking to come start their own team too. It’s as much about participation as it is donating. Thank you for your continued support.
