On June 24th I will be participating in the 2017 Denver Undy Run 5K at City Park. I know everyone has their own reasons for supporting different causes, but this one particularly strikes home with me...and I will run this 5K for multiple reasons.
Reason #1) I don't often share my personal experiences, but in the early 2000's I was suffering from repeated/daily stomach aches. Attributing it to the stresses and negativity in my life I put off seeing a doctor until the pain was unbearable, I was consuming a bottle of Pepto a week, and continuously missing work and oter fun life events. I finally sought help and received my first colonoscopy in 2008. I am so thankful I did not ignore the signs any longer than I already had because they discovered I have colon polyps. These were benign (non-cancerous) but are signs of pre-cancerous conditions which require that I now have a colonoscopy every 5 years. I am extremely blessed that my results have come back benign each time. That is not always the case...which is another reason I run.
Reason #2) I lost a very special woman in my life to colon cancer in 2008. "Aunt" Donna was charismatic, thoughtful, and beautiful inside and out! She was my rock when I ventured out to San Diego leaving my roots in Colorado. She lived in Hemet about an hour and half north and would always welcome me with open arms when I needed a place to feel at home. I have such fond memories of her, and she is forever in my heart!
Reason #3) I will also be participating to honor my friend's wife, Abbey Meneghetti. Abbey lost her battle with colon cancer in 2012. Although I did not have the opportunity to meet Abbey in person, I have extreme compassion for her husband, family, and friends. It is obvious from the stories that have been shared with me that she was an extraordinary young woman who touched many people's lives.
Reason #4) I run for all of those battling colon cancer right now! They are bold and beautiful and need warriors out in this world helping them in this fight!
Please join me on Saturday, June 24th to run the Undy 5K (team info below) or by offering your support with a donation to the Colon Cancer Alliance. I have set my donation goal to the out of pocket cost of ONE colonoscopy (speaking from experience). Your donation could help prevent colorectal cancer or more importantly could help save someone's life.
