As some of you know, I lost my dad last year to Colorectal Cancer. As my sister and I were sitting in the hospital room in Lebannon, Tennessee, listening to the grim facts that my dad had Stage IV colon cancer and would soon lose his life to it, I was blown away at the information the Doctors were telling us.
Colorectal Cancer is the 2nd leading cause of death from cancer in the United States......but is also one of the easiest to treat if caught early enough. They said that he had probably been walking around with this terrible disease, eating away at his body, for years.
I was struck then with the realization that if my dad had been more educated on early signs of Colon Cancer or if there wasn't such a strong stigma against getting tested, we possibly could have been having a totally different conversation. He was making his trip back to Smithton, IL to celebrate a belated Christmas and I was ready to petition for Turkey instead of Ham.
It kills me to think that there will be other daughters/sons/husbands/wives out there going through the loss of a loved one for the same reason.
That is why I will be participating in this years Undy 5000 run/walk. The money raised during the event will go towards increased funding for colorectal cancer research and screening programs and work to increase public awareness of the disease and the importance of early detection.
Please consider supporting my involvement in the Undy 5000 with a tax-deductible donation. Or, if you are interested in participating in the run/walk please consider joining my team.
If anything, please keep in mind that this cancer can and most likely will affect someone you know or love. Spread the awareness by getting tested early and often.
